Who should I call about defective sidewalks?

Call the Building Inspector at 715-536-4880 or Street Department at 715-536-4222 to report damaged, defective, or unsafe sidewalks.  Defective sidewalk will be considered for replacement under the City’s Annual Sidewalk Maintenance Program.

What is a Special Assessment?

A Special Assessment is allowed by State Statutes as a method of charging the cost of municipal improvements that serve and benefit property owners in the vicinity of a project.  The cost of the improvements is apportioned between those adjacent property owners benefitted by the improvement.  See the Special Assessment FAQ for more information.

Will the City survey or locate my property corners?

The City of Merrill does not assist private property owners in locating property irons, surveying private property, or locating property lines between private properties.  A property corner, property iron, or property line can ONLY be determined or verified by a survey performed by a Licensed Land Surveyor.  The Engineering Department has a list of Surveyors.

My neighbor and I would like our alley paved, or maybe curb and gutter and sidewalk installed in front. What should we do?

Property owners can begin the process by completing a PETITION available in the Office of the City Clerk that will be forwarded to the Engineering Department.  As Special Assessments are levied for these types of projects, there is a statutory process that must to be followed that requires a public hearing and approval of the project by the City Council.  Call the City Hall at (715) 536-5594 for additional information.

My neighbor wants to build a deck. Is a Building Permit required?

The City of Merrill Building Code requires that Building Permits be obtained for all alterations and additions to buildings or structures.  It is best to call the Building Department at 715-536-4880 to discuss your project before you start your project.

What is a Zoning Permit?

A Zoning Permit is similar to a Building Permit, except that a Zoning Permit is issued to ensure your project is in compliance with the Zoning Code.  Before you start your project, call the Zoning Administrator at 715-536-4880 to discuss your project’s permit requirements.

What must I do to install a new driveway at the street?

Remove the existing curb and gutter and install a driveway curb section.  The driveway approach between the curb and sidewalk must be hard resurfaced with either asphalt or 6” thick concrete.  Call the Engineering Department for additional information.
