Fishing

Wisconsin is one of the top fishing destinations in the country. Fishing is a very popular recreation activity in the Merrill area. The Prairie River is a Class "A" Trout stream. There are many opportunities to fish here. Here are a few suggestions.

Alexander Lake

Alexander Lake is a 677-acre reservoir on the Wisconsin River, located northwest of Merrill. Council Grounds State Park is on the east side of the lake with a fishing pier, boat landing, camping, hiking and biking trails. The lake and river are home to walleye, northern pike, smallmouth bass, muskie, largemouth bass, bluegill and crappie. The maximum lake depth is 37 feet.

Grandfather Falls

Grandfather Falls Recreation Area

WI-107, Merrill, WI 
The Grandfather Falls Dam is home to the Wisconsin Public Service dam and Hydro Plant. The Grandfather Falls Dam has been producing electricity since 1906. There is fishing above and below the dam.

Prairie Trails Park

Prairie Trails Park is a great place to fish. There are two canoe landings, a scenic overlook, and a handicapped accessible pier. The fish population includes brook trout, brown trout, white sucker, northern pike, bass and forage fish.

River Bend Trail Park

The River Bend Trail Park offers a handicapped accessible pier along the Wisconsin River. Fish include Musky, Panfish, Largemouth Bass, Smallmouth Bass, Northern Pike, Walleye and Catfish.
